Our verdict

A higher-priced genuine-leather lace-up glove for training and sparring, from a specialist Mexican boxing-glove maker, sold in 12oz to 18oz.

Cleto Reyes sells this lace-up glove in its Training Gloves range, separate from its Contest Gloves and its hook-and-loop models. It describes a genuine leather outer over foam padding, an attached thumb and an extra-long satin-lined cuff for wrist support.

An authorised US retailer lists the same closure, leather outer and weights.

Best suited to

Intermediate and experienced boxers who want the secure, adjustable fit of laces and have someone to tie them.

Consider skipping if

You train alone and need to get your gloves on and off without help, or you want the convenience of hook-and-loop.

Pros

  • Genuine leather construction from a specialist Mexican boxing-glove maker whose gloves were used in a World Championship fight in 1945
  • Lace closure gives a more secure, adjustable fit than hook-and-loop - a widely-understood format trade-off, not a performance claim
  • Sold in four weights: 12oz, 14oz, 16oz and 18oz

Cons

  • Laces are awkward for solo training: you can't tighten or loosen them without help

Why we rated it this way

Protection (4): Cleto Reyes describes genuine leather over foam padding, a solid build above the usual level for a training glove, though not lab-tested.

Comfort (4): The extra-long satin-lined cuff and attached thumb are specific comfort and support features. The laces are the trade-off: you need help to tie them.

Materials & Construction (3): Cleto Reyes states a genuine leather outer and a lace-up closure. The leather is a step above the usual outer; the rest is the normal build for training gloves.

Value (3): A premium price for a genuine leather, lace-up glove with foam padding, which is what gloves at this price normally offer.
