Groin Protection

A groin protector covers the groin in sparring and competition. There are three broad styles: a cup on a belt or strap, a larger abdominal-groin guard that also covers the lower abdomen, and protection built into compression shorts.

Check who a protector is made for. A protector may be marketed with a female-specific fit, while a cup may be described by its maker as protecting the male genital area. These claims vary in what they describe, so read the maker's exact wording. Closures range from belts and hook-and-loop straps to compression fits, and a protector may be sized by waist measurement.

For competition, England Boxing's Technical & Competition Rules make groin protection mandatory for male boxers in all competitive boxing (Rule 8.4.1). It is not mandatory for female boxers of any category, who may choose to wear it (Rule 8.4.2). The same rule says breast protectors are not mandatory for them either. For training and sparring, check what your gym or coach expects.
