WAKO requires a mouthguard in every fighting discipline and every age category (WAKO Rules 2022, Art. 2.3.1.3). Clubs may also ask for one before you spar. One UK university club, for example, says a gum shield is required to spar. Mouthguards need no WAKO label.
WAKO allows an upper guard or an upper-and-lower (double) guard in any colour, made of soft, pliable rubber-plastic or silicone. The guard must not stick out of the mouth.
If you wear braces, WAKO does not allow a mouthguard over them without a dentist's certificate, and with lower or both braces it requires a double guard (Art. 2.3.1.3). That is a competition rule, not a fit guarantee: check with the maker that a guard suits braces before you buy. Shock Doctor states its Nano double guard listed here is not compatible with braces.
