Our verdict

KWON's budget kung fu shoe, with a nylon upper and yellow Chinese designs on the sides and heel. It is sold by KWON's own UK store in EU sizes 36 to 47. KWON does not state the sole material or how the shoe fastens, and advises ordering one size larger.

KWON describes the Beijing as "the original Chinese Kung Fu shoes from Beijing, made in Northern China". It says the shoe is manufactured from a "lightly glossy, extremely robust nylon", in black with yellow Chinese design applications on the sides and heel. The shoe comes in EU sizes 36 to 47, and KWON advises: "Please order the shoe one size larger, as it runs a bit small!"

KWON lists it under kung fu, wushu, tai chi and qi gong. It does not state the sole material, the fastening or the surface it is meant for, so those are recorded as not confirmed. UK retailer Playwell describes a "distinctive yellow Kung Fu sole", which gives its colour but not its material. "Extremely robust" is KWON's own claim, not independently tested.

For taolu (forms) competitions, BCCMA's Traditional Taolu rules (2024) say athletes should wear appropriate kung fu or wushu shoes.

Best suited to

Students who want a lower-priced kung fu shoe from a martial arts brand's own UK store, and who are happy to size up as KWON advises.

Consider skipping if

You need to know the sole material before buying, for example where a school does not allow hard or high-traction soles. See the Blitz Adult Cotton Sole Kung Fu Shoes, whose cotton sole Blitz states.

Why we rated it this way

Rated on the clothing criteria (Construction / Materials, Fit & Movement, Durability, Value) - uniforms and kung fu shoes get no Protection score.

Construction / Materials (3): the nylon upper is stated, but not the sole material - the main construction choice for a kung fu shoe - so it is not rated higher.

Fit & Movement (3): a wide EU size range and KWON's clear sizing advice, but no fastening or fit details.

Durability (3): "extremely robust" is KWON's own claim, with no independent evidence.

Value (4): the lower price of the two shoes, from the brand's own UK store, with the upper and sizing advice published - balanced against the unstated sole.
