Our verdict

Mid-thigh hybrid-cut shorts with side slits, inner-thigh stretch panels and an interlocking closure with a silicone-lined waistband. They are the most fully specified shorts in this category.

Hayabusa's UK store describes the Apex Core Mid-Thigh as best for no-gi jiu-jitsu, MMA and striking. It is made from a 240GSM (grams per square metre) 100% polyester fabric, with 88% polyester/12% elastane thigh panels. The store confirms a mid-thigh cut with side slits, inner-thigh stretch panels, an interlocking front closure with dual drawstrings and a silicone-lined waistband.

Hayabusa gives the inseam (inside-leg length) and waist sizes only inside images, so they are not recorded here. Hayabusa's "virtually indestructible" and tear-resistance claims were not independently tested.
