Our verdict
An inexpensive drawstring training short with a pocket for a gum shield (mouthguard), sold directly by RDX in sizes S to 3XL.
RDX confirms a performance polyester fabric with 2% spandex, a drawstring waistband and 3-ply reinforced stitching. It also confirms a dedicated pocket for a gum shield and sizes S to 3XL. RDX's page does not describe the cut, length or side slits (an Amazon listing mentions slits; RDX's own page does not). RDX's anti-microbial treatment claim is the manufacturer's and was not independently tested.
The pocket makes it a training short. MMA rule sets such as the ABC Unified Rules and UWW's amateur rules restrict pockets on competition shorts.
Beginners who want inexpensive shorts for MMA classes, bag work and sparring, including larger sizes up to 3XL.
You are buying shorts to compete in. You want a published cut or a stretch-panel design (see the Hayabusa Apex Core or Venum Light 5.0).
Pros
- Among the lowest-priced shorts in this category, sold directly by RDX's UK store
- A gum-shield pocket for training, per RDX
- Six sizes, S to 3XL
Cons
- Cut, length and slits are not described by RDX
- Its pocket makes it a training short rather than a competition short
- Fabric composition only partly published (2% spandex)
Why we rated it this way
Rated on Comfort, Durability and Value only - this is apparel, and a Protection star score would imply a protective function it does not have.
Comfort (3): a confirmed drawstring waistband and stretch content, but no cut or mobility detail.
Durability (3): reinforced 3-ply stitching is stated, but there is no independent durability evidence.
Value (4): a low price for a short sold manufacturer-direct in the UK in six sizes.
