Our verdict
A short-sleeve compression rash guard with a silicone waistband, for MMA and no-gi sessions. Size up, as Venum itself recommends.
Venum describes the Contender short-sleeve rashguard as a top for jiu-jitsu, grappling and MMA, with a compression fit, a silicone waistband and reinforced seams. Venum lists two fabrics, 81% polyester/19% spandex and 92% polyester/8% spandex, without saying which panels use which. It recommends choosing one to two sizes up.
One feature line on Venum's page mentions long sleeves, which appears to be an error on this short-sleeve product. Venum's claims about friction and muscle recovery were not independently tested.
Beginner and intermediate trainees who want a short-sleeve top for MMA sessions that mix striking and grappling.
You want long sleeves for grappling coverage. You want a ranked colour (see the Tatami ranked rash guard). You need a size above XXL.
Pros
- The only short-sleeve rash guard in this category
- A silicone waistband and compression fit, per Venum
- Sold directly by Venum's UK store
Cons
- Venum recommends sizing up one to two sizes, so fit needs care
- The largest size is XXL
- Not a ranked range
Why we rated it this way
Rated on Comfort, Durability and Value only - this is apparel, and a Protection star score would imply a protective function it does not have.
Comfort (3): a confirmed silicone waistband and compression fit, held back by Venum's own advice to size up one to two sizes.
Durability (3): reinforced seams are stated, but there is no independent durability evidence.
Value (3): a mid-range price for a well-specified top.
