Our verdict

A shell-type wrestling ear guard in one size, sold directly by Hayabusa's UK store. It has a plastic inner shell under a vinyl-dipped EVA outer, with a snap-on chin strap and adjustable hook-and-loop straps.

Hayabusa describes its Wrestling Headgear as a "plastic inner shell with vinyl-dipped EVA outer", held by a "snap-on chin strap with fully adjustable hook-and-loop straps". Hayabusa also describes a "fully adjustable low-profile fit", integrated venting so you can hear your coach, and a wipe-clean finish. The guard comes in one size. Hayabusa links a size guide, which we did not review for this assessment.

UWW's Uniform Regulations (January 2026 version) say ear protectors "must be made of flexible and elastic material without any hard buckle". This guard has a plastic inner shell and a snap chin strap. We make no statement either way on whether it meets that rule. Officials check kit at weigh-in, so check your event's rules.

The maker lists the guard as best for "wrestling training, competition, and daily practice". That is Hayabusa's own usage label, not an approval by any body. UWW and British Wrestling rules regulate ear protectors but do not make them compulsory. Many clubs and US school rules differ, so check with your club.

Best suited to

Club training and practice, for wrestlers who want a shell-type guard with a chin strap and adjustable straps.

Consider skipping if

You want a choice of sizes: this guard is one size only, while the Venum Challenger comes in S/M and L/XL. You need certainty about an event's ear-protector rules before buying. Ask the organiser first.

Why we rated it this way

Rated on design, fit and coverage from the maker's published specification - never on an injury-prevention claim.

Protection (3): Hayabusa describes a "plastic inner shell with vinyl-dipped EVA outer" covering the ears, but there is no independent evidence on how it performs, so it is not rated higher.

Comfort (3): adjustable straps, a low-profile fit and venting are stated, but it comes in one size only.

Durability (3): a wipe-clean vinyl-dipped outer is stated, with no independent durability evidence.

Value (3): a mid-range price for the more fully described of the two guards in this category.

  • Manufacturer — Hayabusa's own UK product page, "Specifications" - plastic inner shell with vinyl-dipped EVA outer, snap-on chin strap with fully adjustable hook-and-loop straps, fully adjustable low-profile fit, integrated venting to hear your coach, wipe clean, "Best for: Wrestling training, competition, and daily practice", ONE SIZE (SKU WHG-BK), and the GBP purchase route.
  • Technical documentation — UWW Uniform Regulations, version January 2026 (printed; the file name says jan2025). §3 ear protectors: "must be made of flexible and elastic material without any hard buckle"; elastic ear flaps covered with shock-absorbing material that presents no danger to the opponent; one manufacturer identification of up to 10cm². The regulations set what ear protectors are made of; they do not make them compulsory.
  • Technical documentation — British Wrestling Association Competition Regulations (January 2020, the edition British Wrestling currently links): nothing in the text makes headgear or ear protectors compulsory; at 1-, 3- and 4-Star events competition wear is declared at the weigh-in (paragraphs 53-54).
