Our verdict

An Essimo competition judogi (judo uniform), and the highest-priced judogi here. Essimo, an IJF Official Judogi Supplier, states it carries the red IJF label. The fabric is 80% cotton and 20% polyester, preshrunk, with a stated weight of 750 grams. It comes in a regular or slim fit.

Essimo lists the IJF Gold in its IJF Approved range and says it meets the latest IJF regulations. It states the jacket and trousers carry the red IJF optical label. Essimo BV is on the IJF's list of Official Judogi Suppliers. The IJF lists suppliers, not models, so look for the red or green IJF label on the jacket and trousers.

At IJF events each jacket and pair of trousers must carry a red or green IJF optical label, and the jacket and trousers must be the same brand (IJF Sport and Organisation Rules, version 14 August 2026, Appendix C). We found no requirement for IJF-labelled judogi in British Judo's Contest Rules (version 23 March 2026) or its Amendments (effective 6 July 2026), so check each event's entry form.

Essimo gives the fabric as "750 grams" (it does not say per square metre) of 80% cotton and 20% polyester, preshrunk. It says to order the size that matches your height. There are two models: Regular, to standard IJF specifications, and Slim Fit, with a smaller waist.

The UK purchase route is essimo.co.uk, a shop owned by Ultimat Defence Limited that Essimo's website does not name as a distributor. The shop sells the white suit as "Essimo IJF Gold Judo Suit White", with "2026" only in the listing's web address. Whether it is the same edition as the suit on Essimo's own IJF Gold page is not confirmed.

Best suited to

Judoka (judo players) competing, or preparing to compete, at events that require an IJF-labelled judogi. The maker states the suit carries the red IJF label, gives the fabric weight and blend, and offers a regular or slim fit.

Consider skipping if

You are a beginner or club judoka who doesn't need an IJF-labelled suit: see the Fighting Films Black Label 600. You would rather buy directly from the maker in the UK (Fighting Films sells its Superstar 750 that way).

Pros

  • Essimo, an IJF Official Judogi Supplier, states the jacket and trousers carry the red IJF label
  • Fabric weight and blend stated by Essimo: 750 grams, 80% cotton and 20% polyester
  • Preshrunk, with Essimo's advice to order your own height, in a regular or slim fit

Cons

  • The highest price in this category
  • Sold in the UK by a shop that Essimo's website does not name as a distributor
  • No belt is stated to be included, and the weave is not stated

Why we rated it this way

Rated on Construction / Materials, Fit & Movement, Durability and Value (the clothing criteria), from the maker's published specification - never on hands-on testing. The IJF approval is the maker's statement beside its IJF supplier listing, and is not rated as a quality.

Construction / Materials (4): Essimo states the fabric weight (750 grams, unit as given) and the blend (80% cotton, 20% polyester) - a fuller published fabric specification than the other competition judogi here; the weave is not stated.

Fit & Movement (4): two published fits (regular and slim), preshrunk fabric and a plain sizing rule (order your height) - rated on those details, not on testing.

Durability (3): Essimo's own strength claim for the blend is not independent evidence.

Value (3): the highest price here, for the fullest published fabric specification of the two competition suits, bought through a UK shop rather than the maker.

That this listing is the same edition as Essimo's IJF8W page is not confirmed.
  • Other source — essimo.co.uk terms and conditions: the site is "owned by Ultimat Defence Limited", 387 Wigan Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan WN4 0AR (Companies House: ULTIMAT DEFENCE LIMITED, 07208550, incorporated 30 March 2010, same address). Essimo B.V.'s own website (about us, contact, affiliation pages) names no UK distributor, so the shop is not recorded as authorised.
  • Technical documentation — IJF Official Supplier List (undated page, read 2026-10-22). "Master IJF Judogi Supplier": Taishan; "IJF Premium Judogi Supplier": Double D Adidas; "IJF Official Judogi Supplier" includes "Essimo BV" (Den Helder, The Netherlands; web essimo-judo.com) and "Fighting Films Store Ltd" (Unit 6 Rose Green Industrial Park, Bristol; web fightingfilms.com). The list names suppliers and IJF-approved laboratories, never judogi models.
  • Technical documentation — IJF Sport and Organisation Rules, "Version: 14 August 2026". Appendix C (IJF Judogi Rules): C1.1 national federations are responsible for athletes wearing approved IJF judogi at IJF official events; jacket and trousers the same brand; reversible judogi not allowed; a belt other than black must be flexible and is exempt from the IJF label; C1.1.5 the IJF label is checked with a UV lamp, the supplier's logo must be on jacket, trousers and belt, sleeves must cover the wrist bone, the skirt must cover the buttocks, and protections (knee, elbow, shin pads) may not have the slightest metallic or rigid element; C1.2 each jacket and trousers must have an unforgeable red or green optical label (belts blue, red or green); C1.9 white or blue within set colour references; C1.10 skirt at least 20cm below the belt for the -73kg group (women -48 to -70kg, men -60 to -73kg) and 25cm for the +73kg group (women -78 and +78kg, men -81 to +100kg), trousers ending no more than 5cm above the ankle bone, belt 4-5mm thick with 20-30cm from the knot; C1.11 and C1.13 female athletes must wear a short-sleeved, round-necked white T-shirt. • Technical documentation — British Judo Association, Amendments to the IJF Contest Rules, "Version: Effective 06/07/2026" (listed "As of 6th July 2026" on British Judo's Contest Rules page, 2026-10-22). With the IJF Contest Rules they form the rules at all BJA licensed events; unless a level is named they apply at all levels. 5.1: white and blue judogi only in competition; the athlete called first never wears blue; organisers may specify on the entry form whether blue is mandatory or optional; with a blue judogi both wear grade belts, where both wear white the first wears a white belt and the second a blue belt; the referee in charge may allow other belt colours, generally only at Level 1 or 2 events or Dan gradings; at Level 1 any colour of judogi, jacket and trousers the same solid colour. 5.2: sleeves reach the wrist joint at most and 5cm above it at least. 5.3: grade badges on the skirt below the belt, max 10x10cm. 5.4: a non-compliant judogi must be changed within 6 minutes or the contest is lost by kiken-gachi. 5.5: soft shin pads without hard stiffeners; an underfoot band allowed; no instep pad. 5.6: a T-shirt or rash guard may be worn by anyone and must be worn in female categories; plain white, round neck, sleeves up to 5cm above the wrist joint, no advertising beyond a maker's label of at most 3x15cm, and it "should be worn tucked into the judogi trousers". No mouthguard rule, and no requirement for IJF-labelled judogi, was found in the text.
  • Technical documentation — British Judo Contest Rules, "BJA Version: 23/03/2026", based on the IJF SOR of 21/01/2026; British Judo's adoption of the IJF Refereeing Rules for all British Judo events, read with the Amendments. Appendix 2 (Judogi, generally Level 4): a judogi is a jacket and trousers worn with a belt; no red and white belt; skirt to cover the buttocks; belt 4-5mm thick with 20-30cm from the knot; protections checked and without metallic or rigid parts; colour "judged 'by eye' as being white or blue" at BJA events. It contains no requirement for IJF-labelled judogi or IJF supplier logos, and no mouthguard rule (text searched 2026-10-22).
