Our verdict

A strap-free knit sleeve with EVA foam padding along the shin and instep. It is the pull-on style IMMAF's 2021 amateur rules prefer for competition, with no straps or hardware to shift or come undone.

Hayabusa describes the Core Sleeved as a fully knit, sock-like sleeve with a strap-free design and "zero hardware". It uses EVA foam in a triple-splint structure along the shin and instep. Hayabusa lists it as best for beginner and intermediate users, and says the sleeve hugs the leg and foot. It does not state the sleeve's fibre content, and gives sizing only as a size-chart image.

A pull-on design without hook-and-loop is the style IMMAF's 2021 amateur rules prefer for competition. In its own comparison of slip-on and strapped guards, Hayabusa notes that slip-on designs stay locked in place but are less adjustable.

Best suited to

Sessions that mix striking with takedowns and ground work, for beginner and intermediate MMA trainees who want a guard that stays in place without straps.

Consider skipping if

Your priority is maximum coverage for hard, kick-heavy sparring. You need to fine-tune the fit with adjustable straps.

Pros

  • A strap-free, hardware-free sleeve, confirmed by Hayabusa
  • EVA triple-splint padding along both the shin and the instep
  • Sold in four sizes by Hayabusa's own UK store

Cons

  • A sleeve cannot be adjusted with straps, so the size has to be right
  • Sleeve fibre content is not stated, and sizing is given only as a size-chart image
  • Lighter construction than a strap-on Muay Thai guard

Why we rated it this way

Protection (3): confirmed EVA padding over the shin and instep, but a sleeve is lighter than a strap-on guard, so not rated higher.

Comfort (4): the strap-free, hardware-free knit sleeve is a specific, confirmed stay-put feature for mixed striking and grappling.

Durability (3): no independent durability evidence.

Value (3): a mid-range price for a well-specified sleeve guard.
