Suitable for

  • MMA
  • Kickboxing

Venum describes the Kontact as a guard in breathable elasticated cotton (100% cotton) for Muay Thai, kickboxing and MMA. It protects the shin and forefoot and fastens with hook-and-loop closures at the calf and under the foot. Venum does not mention any foam padding. WAKO's competition shin guards are made from hard foam-rubber material (WAKO Rules 2022, Art. 2.3.1.9), and WAKO events require WAKO-labelled shin guards. Venum mentions neither and makes no WAKO approval or label claim, so we list the Kontact for beginners' class training only, not WAKO bouts.

Research-based editorial assessment

Our verdict

An elasticated-cotton guard with instep cover and hook-and-loop closures, and the lowest-cost shin guard in this category. It is a sensible first pair for technique classes, not a guard for hard sparring.

Venum describes the Kontact as a breathable elasticated-cotton shin guard for Muay Thai, kickboxing and MMA, protecting the shin and forefoot. It fastens with hook-and-loop closures at the calf and under the foot. Venum does not describe the padding. A separate "Kontact Shin Guards Without Foot" model has no instep cover, so check the product name when buying.

Because it fastens with hook-and-loop, it does not meet IMMAF's 2021 amateur rules. Those rules forbid Velcro-type strap fasteners on competition shin guards, though IMMAF issues its own kit at its events.

Best suited to

Beginners who want inexpensive shin and instep cover for technique classes and light drilling.

Consider skipping if

You plan regular hard sparring. Look instead at a guard whose padding construction is described, such as the Fumetsu Ghost S3, an MMA-specific hybrid.

Pros

  • The lowest-priced shin guard in this category, sold directly by Venum's UK store
  • Covers the shin and instep, confirmed by Venum
  • Five sizes, XS to XL

Cons

  • Venum does not describe the padding
  • Hook-and-loop closures, not a strap-free pull-on design
  • Easily confused with the Kontact "Without Foot" model, which has no instep cover

Why we rated it this way

Protection (2): Venum does not describe any padding, unlike every other guard here, so it cannot be credited with more - this reflects the evidence, not a test result.

Comfort (3): an elasticated cotton sleeve is confirmed, but nothing further about fit.

Durability (3): no independent durability evidence.

Value (4): the lowest price here for confirmed shin and instep cover across five sizes.

  • Manufacturer — Venum's own UK product page - 100% elasticated cotton, shin and forefoot protection, hook-and-loop closures at the calf and under the foot, Muay Thai/kickboxing/MMA positioning, sizes XS-XL, and the GBP purchase route.
  • Manufacturer — Venum's listing for the separate Kontact "Without Foot" model - recorded so the two are not confused.
  • Technical documentation — IMMAF's amateur MMA rules (January 2021 edition, which IMMAF says applies while its rules are under review): the preferred shin guard is a tight-fitting pull-on sock/neoprene type, Velcro-type strap fasteners are forbidden, and competitors are issued kit at IMMAF events.
